Outi Nissi
IRC and senior lecturer at Oulu Academy of Applied Sciences
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?
I grew up in a countryside village near Oulu and studied classical piano in Helsinki and Prague. Having graduated from the Sibelius Academy I went to work in Kokkola as a piano teacher in a local conservatoire. I soon noticed that teaching small kids is not my passion nor strongest side, and moved back to my home town to work in Oulu University of Applied Sciences. Privately, I live with my two children and spend lots of time in Piteå (Sweden) where my boyfriend lives.
WHAT IS YOUR PATH TO THE CURRENT POSITION?
Been there, done that. During my 12 years in OUAS Music department, I’ve worked as a piano teacher and accompanist, but also as director, head of degree programme, study counsellor, study orientation in-charge, international relations coordinator and manager in several different projects. Currently my working day mostly consists of accompaniment and correpetition, meeting and helping students with their studies and promoting internationalization in our department. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier with my present work assignments. In addition to my work at the University I perform regularly as a pianist and chamber musician.
WHAT IS YOUR PASSION IN YOUR JOB?
Music is on top of my list here. However, during the past few years I have got an insight into international circles in the field of education, met inspiring people around the world and seen the benefits that international experiences have to offer to our students and staff. I‘m convinced that awareness of foreign cultures, habits and history gives strong assets to operate in today’s world and to overcome problems caused by prejudices and confrontations. I'm proud to be one little piece in the community that unites people and creates understanding through music and international actions.
