Malin Ahlén

International Relations Coordinator, Royal College of Music in Stockholm

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?
I grew up in Skövde which is a small town between Stockholm and Gothenburg in Sweden. I moved away from there when I was nineteen to study and work abroad in Italy, Spain, and Great Britain. I have always loved communication and people and therefore decided to study literature and languages as well as project management.
My language studies took me to Amsterdam as an Erasmus+ exchange student, but I was one of those “bad” exchange students who did not come home but ended up staying eight years in Amsterdam. I started working at a publishing company and worked many years with marketing in that company before I finally moved back to Sweden in 2004 when my son was born.

WHAT IS YOUR PATH TO THE CURRENT POSITION?
This is my fourth internationalization job at a higher education institution in Sweden and all positions have been very different. I started off in the internationalization business with sending dentistry students to Africa and then worked with students in humanities and psychology. It has been quite a journey and working with students and staff within music now is an altogether different story especially since music students are not automatically accepted when nominated for exchange studies. I am glad though to be working in the Arts where my interest lies.

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION IN YOUR JOB?
My passion has always been communication and people so watching people grow as they go abroad is always a pleasure. Developing new strategies and discussing ideas with colleagues within the Royal College of Music and in my networks is also a big incentive for me. I hope to learn more about this as I gain more experience within this position.
