CECILIE GISKEMO
Advisor, International Office, Norwegian Academy of Music
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?
I grew up on the mid-west coast of Norway, in a small city called Molde. The city is nick named “the city of jazz and roses”, which probably was one of the reasons I ended up studying jazz vocals and composition. I got my degree in music in the UK and studied music education at the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) in Oslo after returning from living many years abroad. My teaching led me to working as a music teacher in both Zimbabwe and Nepal, which was some very exciting years both musically and culturally. Besides my work at NMH, I teach from time to time, play in a few projects/bands, as well as being involved with event planning of a variety of cultural events.
WHAT IS YOUR PATH TO THE CURRENT POSITION?
After teaching vocals and piano since I was 20 years old, doing some freelance work as a performing musician and working with different cultural organisations, I was ready to try something new. In 2019 I got the position as a Talent Coordinator at the Norwegian Academy of Music, and just recently, in august 2024, I started in the new position as an adviser at the International office at the same institution.
WHAT IS YOUR PASSION IN YOUR JOB?
What I like most about my current job is that it combines three things I’m very passionate about: music, people and international relations. I love meeting new people and get to know more about their different cultures. I find it very inspiring to have an international outlook on the work our institution is involved in and learn from partners, students and teachers that we meet through our exchange programmes and collaborations with other music institutions.
